The Passage Gallery at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Arlington based artist, Bryan Jernigan.

The solo exhibition, Peregination: paintings by Bryan Jernigan will be on display June 16, 2018 to July 29, 2018 with an artist’s reception scheduled for 2pm to 4pm on Saturday, June 23, 2018.

Bryan is a superb colorist and a noted arts educator specializing in pastel. These paintings exemplify a new direction in his work. They reference landscapes – summers at the beach, an afternoon at the park but also a shift in his work from representational views of landscapes to an abstracted view where the material, texture and delight in color become the subject. The 20 paintings as a body of work begin to echo the work of Richard Dienkorn.

Bryan describes his process as follows:

“When I begin painting, I paint intuitively, adjusting the composition and choosing bold and contrasting color. My painting process begins with large, gestural movements that overlap and intersect, building an organic network of line, shape and color. Along the way, there is a moment where the painting starts to make suggestions and I have to ‘catch’ the clues it gives me.

In this show – Peregrination – these abstracted landscapes are my attempt to reveal not only how I see the places I’ve been, but also the feelings I have experienced when absorbing the feelings of a place. Peregrination is a long, and meandering journey – one I feel we are all on from the moment we gain consciousness. Taking in both the physical and mental landscape along the way – and having a feeling of connectedness – is of ultimate importance to me.”
