The Passage Gallery at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center at Northern Virginia Community College’s Alexandria Campus is excited to present the work of 2017 American University graduates Sarah O’Donoghue and Zarina Zuparkhodjaeva. The show Change, Witnessed will be on display Sept. 22 to Nov. 5 with an artists’ reception scheduled for 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.

The two artists explained in their artists’ statement that an artist’s physical environment can impact her art. Zuparkhodjaeva’s paintings for Change, Witnessed focus on exploring urban landscapes while O’Donoghue is drawn to portraiture and fabricated environments. The artists say their bodies of work may seem unrelated upon first glance, but upon a closer look, the paintings build a story of transitional spaces which allude to both commercial development and dissolving cultures.

O’Donoghue is a native of the Washington, DC area and Zuparkhodjaeva has been living in Washington, DC for more than a decade. Their paintings refer to shifts in DC’s landscape through their visual language construction and disappearance

O’Donoghue and Zuparkhodjaeva both received master’s degrees from American University. O’Donoghue earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and Zuparkhodjaeva attended Georgetown University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a finance and studio art focus. The artists have shown their work in a number of solo and group shows all over the world including exhibitions in the Washington, DC area, New York, California, Washington State, Argentina, South Korea and Arizona. In previous years, Zuparkhodjaeva also had residencies in Berlin and Chautauqua, New York.
