This September, Honfleur Gallery and Vivid Solutions Gallery showcase two artists who approach themes of communal interaction in distinct ways. Arena by Selin Balci at Honfleur Gallery presents the artist’s microbial compositions that are guided by the definition of an arena as a place or scene of activity or debate. The Farms at Vivid Solutions Gallery brings together photographer Jared Soares’s chronicle of The George Goodman basketball league that competes at The Barry Farms Dwellings courts each summer. Both exhibits open on Friday, September 12, 2014 with receptions with the artists from 6-9pm.
In Arena Selin Balci’s concepts are explored by using living entities to recreate observable interactions and conflicts across the picture surface, where the outcomes reveal boundaries, edges and distinctive forms. Microorganisms–which become the color, texture, and context in her work–are the performers within an artificially created living platform where conflicts are played out. Balci received her BSc from Istanbul University, BFA from West Virginia University, and MFA from University of Maryland. She is the recipient of College Art Association (CAA) 2012 Professional-Development Fellowship, So-Hamiltonian Fellowship in Washington, DC, and Smack Mellon’s Hot Picks Artist Award.
Jared Soares started documenting The Barry Farms Dwellings basketball court in the summer of 2013 and has continued through the 2014 season. Images from both seasons are brought together in The Farms. For 39 years The George Goodman League has been a summer staple for basketball fans in the District of Columbia, especially in Southeast. Weekend games feel like a homecoming reunion. Jared has worked with editorial and commercial clients such as Discovery, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and Wired among others. His work has been exhibited in both group and solo shows at venues including Museo d’art Contemporena Roma, The O. Winston Link Museum, Longwood Arts Gallery, and during Look3 Festival of the Photograph.
