Lars Tunbjörk (1956-2015) is one of Sweden’s most internationally renowned photographers. His photographs reveal warmth and humor and a deep fascination for people’s loneliness and longing for meaning. With his critical eye and sense of the absurd, Tunbjörk created almost surrealistic photo art that captured audiences worldwide. At a young age, Tunbjörk established himself as one of Sweden’s most prominent press photographers. During his career, he published over 10 photography books and did close to 20 assignments for The New York Times Magazine alone. Following his sudden passing in 2015, he left behind the Swedish expression ‘Tunbjörkare,’ meaning an image or environment that reflects the absurd in everyday situations.

The retrospective A View From the Side at House of Sweden includes works from Tunbjörk’s four series Landet utom sig (1993)Office (2001)Home (2003), and Winter (2007)The exhibition is produced by the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC in collaboration with the Lars Tunbjörk Foundation. House of Sweden is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday between 12:00pm to 5:00pm (ET).
