NOVO, A Happy Day DT No. 3 (2023), 42 x 64.7 inches, archival pigment / Hahnemühle paper
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 13 from 5pm to 8pm

Terzo Piano is excited to present for the first time in our nation’s capital, “Democratic Memory. A Happy Day,” an exhibition by Reynier Leyva Novo, curated by Olga Viso. Known as Novo, the artist is one of Cuba’s leading conceptual artists.

“A Happy Day” is a work strongly connected to the collective memory generated in the different contexts where political figures, mainly dictators, have gained a presence through their photographic images. This work is nourished by the images impregnated in the memory of millions of people and in the freedom of all of us to reinterpret those images individually. This work uses the rights of that collective body – of that collective Memory – affected by the images on which this series is based.

Working across media, Novo combines anthropological and historical research with cutting-edge technology to examine the psychological and sociological effects of complex issues throughout the history of Cuba, the Caribbean and the world. He develops his projects through mining historical data and official documents, transforming their contents into minimalist and conceptually charged sculptures and multimedia installations that are at once visually engaging and intellectually provocative. In recent years, Novo has secured his position as a rising star of the international art world through participation in biennials and exhibitions worldwide, as well numerous exhibitions and acquisitions of his work by major institutions.

“Democratic Memory. A Happy Day” will open April 14 and run through May 31, 2023. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 13th from 5 to 8 pm. The exhibition is supplemented by a limited edition, full color publication designed by the artist.
