15 Minutes of Fame, or Death by Narcissism

1000 selfies are posted on Instagram every second.  Millennials are expected to take over 25,000 selfies in their lifetime.  259 people have died seeking the perfect selfie. Andy Warhol was prophetic when he said ‘in the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes’. The dogged pursuit of placing oneself in every photo is a kind of search for fame.

Referencing an encounter between Warhol and Jim Morrison in the film the Doors, this painting is a playful musing on selfie culture and the pursuit of fame. Venice is the backdrop where selfie mania is on full display and selfie sticks are the number 1 cause of death on the Rialto and Accademia bridges.
