The Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts and the Forum Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition, My Russian Soul: Paintings by Nataliya Gurshman.

The exhibition will run from April 27, 2019 – June 9th, 2019 with a public exhibition reception on Saturday, May 4th, 2019 2-4PM.

Nataliya grew up in the northern part of the former Soviet Union, in the city of Leningrad where winter and snow were a big part of her life. In her work, she keeps coming back to her memories of her childhood in Russia.  This body of work is inspired by her love for winter and memories of the places she has lived. Some pieces are representational, while others are abstract. She expresses her energy and love for snow equally well in both styles.

“Many of these works are inspired either by a real place or my childhood memories and emotions. It is a gratifying feeling once the painting is complete. I exhale; feel hungry, happy, and exhausted mentally. The feeling of accomplishment fills me up. I feel all the hard work has not been wasted, and think- I can paint, I can do this well!”

Nataliya Gurshman has been an adjunct faculty member of Northern Virginia Community College since 2005.  She has an MFA in studio art from St. Petersburg Art Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia and a BFA in illustration from The Art Institute of Boston. She has exhibited widely both locally and nationally including the Art League Gallery, The Dietrick Gallery in Boston, and Northern Virginia Community College. Her paintings are in private collections throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East.

The Schlesinger Center is located at 4915 East Campus Drive, Alexandria, VA. Public hours are Monday through Friday from 10am – 5Pm.  For additional information about art shows and concert hall events, Contact the Gallery Director, Mary Welch Higgins at mhiggins@nvcc.edu.
