Opening Reception: Saturday, May 3 from 7pm to 11pm
The exhibit runs May 3 – June 1, 2014
The Fridge presents a series of 40 new artworks from DC-based artist Ben Tolman. For these pieces, the artist plays on the view that, through the lens of human perspective, nothing in our found environment and relationships may contain absolute truth.
The horizon line is the only element that remains the same in these works, creating a continuous series with a cast of characters put into radically contradictory environments. Nostalgia for video games, movies and television; real-world events such as Pussy Riot performances; and surreal scenarios like a Terry Gilliam-style disembodied hand squishing an onlooker weave through pieces that simultaneously exemplify situations with rich meaning and meaningless happenstance.
The series presents a mythology that is rich and dynamic, while the stripped down minimalism in each piece allows storylines to breathe and develop in a way never experienced in Tolman’s artworks past.
The artist will be in attendance at the opening reception and a soundtrack from Bellflur will accompany the evening.
