Reception: Friday, September 13 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm
The Martha Spak Gallery at the Wharf is pleased to present an exhibition-featuring artist Michael Crossett. The SW District show will run from August 29-September 29, 2019 with a reception Friday, September 13 6:30-8:30 pm and an art demonstration and discussion September 14 1-3pm. The exhibition focuses are his mixed media paintings.
Michael Crossett is a mixed media artist with roots in photography with familiar sights of Washington, DC and celebrating the city’s rich history and recording its fast-paced changes. The artist creates vibrant art with a hint of mystery and energy. He collects relevant historical imagery and other iconography to add to his final compositions. Crossett transform each composition from photography into mixed media by creating layered images, silk screens and resin.
The use of imagery is important and energizing. For this show, the walls will be layered with paintings of urban scenes, words and patterns. The artist is able to create vibrant, yet translucent images by silk screens. One at a time, Crossett hand–pulls color through these screens, layering hundreds of images into vibrant arrangements of recognizable icons. With a an undeniable nod to graffiti, his pieces show us Washington, DC thought his eyes, breathing new life in to landmarks often considered stale or stoic and celebrating DC’s newest neighborhood The Wharf.
The gallery features monthly exhibitions. SW DISTRICT runs through September 29, 2019. The artist will be present at the reception Friday, September 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., and art demonstration September 14 from 1-3pm.
Gallery hours are Wednesday – Sunday 12-7pm and by appointment.
