Reception: Thursday, June 2 from 6pm to 8pm
The Silva Gallery x Latela Curatorial is excited to announce the solo exhibition Hotter, Wetter, Deadlier by Andrea Limauro, which is composed of the artist’s ongoing Climate Change series that brings attention to the looming local and global disasters due to the effects of climate change.
Inspired by his professional career as a city planner and informed by historical references and scientific data, Limauro’s artwork serves as a prediction and a wake up call to the social and political implications of climate change in the nation’s capital. On view is A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats, a modern day history painting that captures the defeat of civilization by inundation. Limauro’s vision is not far-fetched, as the 360-degree horizontal panorama depicts selected sites that have both a history of flooding and are projected to be at even higher risk of flooding due to sea levels rising and the more frequent and powerful weather events expected in the near future.
Utilizing a combination of mediums such as screenprinting, collage, striking color palette, gold leaf, repetitive patterns and photographic references to the past, Limauro creates an allegorical narrative and envisions a future devoid of humanity yet abundant in natural resources. Limauro addresses humanity’s unwillingness to make immediate sacrifices and lifestyle changes in order to guarantee shared future gains, progress, and safety for ourselves and future generations – unless catastrophe strikes. He invites us to consider how the collective human condition affects climate change and could result in a reality that is both credibly real and fantastically dystopian.
