While looking at the darkened doorway of the ruins of Ephesus, a Greek city in what is now Turkey, Marian Van Landingham suddenly envisioned a window to the sky and an innate sense of hope and revival. That is what she painted. “When I travel I see more intensely because of what is unfamiliar and new and this forms the basis for my work” Van Landingham explained.

In her studio in Alexandria’s Torpedo Factory Art Center, founded by her as an art center in 1974, Van Landingham refines the images that first piqued her interest. It is that sense of vision that Van Landingham presents in serene paintings and exquisite fire enamels in Revival, her solo show opening September 12 in the Torpedo Factory’s Gallery now bearing her name.

The Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association (TFAA) renamed the gallery to honor Van Landingham for her role as founder of the art center as well as her years of service, wisdom and guidance as a leader of the TFAA. A reception honoring Van Landingham and celebrating the the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s 45th anniversary will be held 5-8 pm, Thursday, September 12, in the Torpedo Factory’s new Van Landingham Gallery on the third floor. Her show will be in the Van Landingham Galery from September 3 – 30.

The Gallery is open daily from 11am – 5pm and until 8pm on Thursdays.

Torpedo Factory is located at 105 N. Union St., Alexandria, VA.
