Apophenia by Zack Rimbaud-a new one-person show at Torpedo Factory Artists @ Mosaic-focuses on perception and reminiscence.
For the first time, the Torpedo Factory Artists’ Association is presenting a solo show at Torpedo Factory Artists @ Mosaic, its satellite gallery. Painter Zack Rimbaud uses a variety of liquid mediums to discover fresh possibilities in this new work.
Rimbaud sees his artistic process as an event, a rhythmic dialogue between the materiality of the medium and himself. Typically, he places his canvas on the floor and applies the first layer spontaneously, laying down large patches of liquid colors through a rapid gestural movement, moving around the canvas, and moving the canvas itself to amplify the effect, and disrupt it as well. He uses a variety of mediums to explore their potential and to venture into new possibilities.
In a sense, Rimbaud’s work is an exploration into matter, and it allows for a fair amount of unpredictability. It recalls at times geological formations, but the subject matter, if there must be one, is creation itself. The subject is only secondary to the matter and is largely-if not exclusively-informed by the material he is using. The first layer is the matrix on which Rimbaud builds structure through a process of association and formal problem solving. The association process bears resemblance to apophenia, in that there is a quest to discover meaningful connections in randomness.
With Rimbaud’s new body of work, he intends to explore the phenomenon further, in reverse so to speak, by attempting to retrace the process and record, as accurately as he can, the path taken by the interplay of reflection and association. This journey will be accessible on Rimbaud’s website in the form of a recording. https://www.zackrimbaud-art.com/
