Transformer’s 19th Annual DC Solo Artist Exhibition: Commemorative Strands by artist Artise Fletcher opens Saturday, September 17.
Commemorative Strands, will explore the sociological meanings and issues surrounding hair, especially in Black culture. Referencing and reinterpreting traditional African commemorative cloths – brightly and intricately designed tapestries honoring individuals, political figures, occasions, and more – Fletcher’s first solo exhibition will present reimagined versions of these cloths using synthetic Kanekalon hair, along with photographs and projected video works.
