Access/Index by photographer Katherine Sifers opens Friday, January 9, 2015 at Vivid Solutions Gallery, with a reception with the artist from 6pm to 8pm. The still life compositions in the exhibit explore both the cost and access to food in Washington, DC. A panel discussion focusing on these issues will be held on Thursday, February 5 at 7pm.
Sifers composes the still life tables using $25 worth of groceries purchased at various local markets, choosing the freshest items available. The resulting photographs are displayed using overhead projectors, which creates a viewing environment that refers to the process of their creation. Through the work presented in Access/Index, Sifers seeks to create a balance between elements she sees at work in Dutch vanitas painting, our current political landscape, and a dialogue about the transience of life.
Sifers is a photographer and installation artist with an Associates of Applied Science in Photography from Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology, Bachelors of Fine Arts from Columbia College, Chicago and her Master in Fine Arts from the George Washington University. She was a recipient of the Albert P. Weisman Scholarship and the Morris Louis Scholarship. She has received the Columbia College Chicago Academic Excellence Award, the Columbia College Chicago Photography Department Purchase Award, and the Toel Award for Photography. She exhibits her work locally, regionally, and nationally.
