The Washington Studio School Gallery will supply art materials (easels, drawing media, paper, mirrors) available to WSS students, staff, faculty, and the general public for the purpose of drawing portraits. The portrait can be self-portraits or portraits of other people in the gallery.

Participants can bring their own supplies, or use gallery supplies. Paper will be available in several formats (ex: small ~4” x 6”, medium ~12” x 15”, large ~15” x 22”). Washington Studio School suggest that participants spend at a minimum one hour per portrait (participants can make multiple portraits), and to draw from direct observation (Ie: to not use photography, references, or digital aids). Each work will include an artist signature, date, and name of the person depicted. Finished portraits will be installed in the gallery space for the duration of the project for public exhibition. Selected works, with the approval of the artist, will be shared online through social media.

Neighbors from the local Dupont Circle/Kalorama community, students, staff, and faculty from the Washington Studio School, and visual artists from the greater DC Metro Area are especially encouraged to participate, though all are welcome.

The project will officially begin during WSS’s Summer Big Draw event SUNDAY, JUNE 25 FROM NOON TO 4PM and run until JULY 28. After the Big Draw participants can come during WSS business hours to draw self-portraits, and during drop-in drawing sessions or at few specially arranged model sessions in July to draw portraits of others. Washington Studio School looks forward to seeing and exhibiting your portraits, both traditional and contemporary
