Opening Reception: Friday, November 3 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm

On view from November 3 through December 14, 2017, at White Cloud Gallery, Intimacy: Idyllwild Paintings of Michael Newberry is a comprehensive presentation of current definitive work by this contemporary realist artist who, in his fifth decade painting, has taken up residence in Idyllwild, California. Curated by White Cloud Gallery director Miguel Perez Lem, the exhibition features over 20 paintings representing full-figure male and female nudes, couples, and close-ups inspired by the dappled light of Idyllwild.

The exhibition will be on view at the White Cloud Gallery, which shows local and established international artists, and works by its artist/director Miguel Perez Lem. “We are pleased to host this first Washington, DC exhibition of Michael Newberry’s powerful and intimate work,” says Miguel Perez Lem. “The White Cloud Gallery is an ideal setting to show his work.”

Born in La Jolla, California, Michael Newberry (1956– ) was raised on the beach, sparking a lifelong interest in joyful freedom. His grandmother introduced him to great artists through her Time-Life Library of Art editions. From 1974-77 he studied fine art at U.S.C. mentored by American Modernist Edgar Ewing. From 1977-79 he studied the figure exclusively at the Free Academy Psychopolis in The Hague, Holland. For the next few decades he set up studios in New York City, The Hague, Los Angeles, Torremolinos Pueblo in Spain, and Rhodes in Greece, before settling in Idyllwild. Newberry derives inspiration from solitary life and intellectual friendships with what he calls neo-reason philosophers, artists, and creators.

Newberry is best known for his romantic realist life-size figurative paintings capturing stylised moments in time and light. His paintings allude to questions about meaningfulness, love, the sublime, acceptance, and psychological depth. Using friends as models, he collaborates with them, incorporating their personal expression into his ideas of human evolution. Newberry’s Intimacy exhibition includes his Arabesque Series of male, female, and heterosexual lovers which demonstrate his admiration for Greek, Renaissance, and contemporary figurative sculptures. This exhibition also shows a series of up-close viewpoints of the human body that abstract the perspective while remaining realistic in detail.

Newberry has exhibited in New York, Athens, Rome, and Los Angeles.
