Opening: Saturday, November 14 from 4pm to 6pm

On November 13, 2015, White Room will begin a new series of sharing their creative space with local artists. Tehreema Mitha will inaugurate the space with a solo exhibition. After the opening reception, the exhibition will be on display for three weeks, by appointment only, through December 7, 2015.

Tehreema Mitha was born in Pakistan and grew up in a home full of paintings, books, music and lively debate. Despite growing up in the Muslim tradition, she studied many religions, read widely, trained in the Classical South Indian dance style of Bharatanatyam from the age of seven under the tutelage of her mother (a Christian Bengali) and learned classical North Indian vocals.

In college Mitha was able to explore her interest in drawing and painting. Society was becoming increasingly conservative and more fundamental view of Islam became the norm, Mitha gained entry to The National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1982. While studying there, she obtained her BA in Philosophy and English Literature from Kinnaird College, and after the four-year course, left NCA in 1986 with her MA in Fine Arts.

In her work, Mitha is not afraid of bold colors and their varied combinations. It is part of her heritage. While she loves and respects color, she does not wish to cover every surface with it when a negative space can speak volumes. The illusions in her work come from a culture that is ancient in its roots but still forges ahead, reinventing itself in all parts of the known globe. Her work addresses the confusion often found in our transient world, by taking on a soothing abstraction into which any spectator can find their own meaning and can pretend to make their own. Mitha celebrates the mingling of pasts and present, while leaving the future open.
