Expansive Portraiture, Distinctive Tableware, and Unique Collage in August at The Art League

The Art League is excited to present three exhibitions for August: Petal Reverie: From Trauma to Beauty by Rashid Ali Muhammad, emBODY; and Tabletop 2023.

“Petal Reverie: From Trauma to Beauty” by Rashid Ali Muhammad

Faux flower petals are the primary medium for Rashid Ali Muhammad’s vibrant collages. During the Covid-19 quarantine, Muhammad began dismantling artificial flower arrangements to create new, generative patterns. The meditative method of breaking down and rebuilding, he says, speaks to the ability to heal from trauma and see the work anew.

“The inspiration for this exhibition was using color theory and patterns to create calming and rejuvenating art,” Muhammad says. “In a sense, it’s a form of escapism to reduce stress and anxiety.”

As a queer, gender-nonconforming person of the African diaspora, the ability to deconstruct and reform reality—a method of thinking and creation that can counter society’s hierarchies and binaries—resonates with Muhammad. He uses found objects, organic shapes, patterns, and symbols as cultural signifiers to highlight the vast intersections shaping the human experience while creating space for healing and rejuvenation.

Tabletop 2023
After a three-year absence, one of our most popular exhibits returns! Tabletop 2023 showcases the artistry of various functional wares associated with the table.
